Gangnam Style

A new song is seemingly recieving world wide attention from right here in South Korea.

Gangnam Style (강남스타일).

Gangnam is a neighborhood in Seoul.  It is a really affluent area and is the equivalent of California's 90210 neighborhood.  Most of the people that live within this neighborhood have more money then the entire country of South Korea and some of them dress and look the part but when it comes to the night life, doesn't everyone act the same?

The main singer in this video was actually educated at Berkley School of Music.  Awesome, right?   I thought so too. :-)

Did you ask for a quick vocabulary lesson?  Of course you did!

Oppa means boyfriend or brother in Korean so when you hear "Oppa..." he is referring to him being a boyfriend or a brother.  The word is interchangeable depending upon who you are talking to.

Check out the video below via Youtube.  It is catchy and pretty fun to watch.

The next video includes the English subtitles.  They are not inappropriate exactly, just suggestive.

The people in the video are local TV personalities or local K-Pop ) Korean Pop music singers form highly popular music groups over here.

Hope you enjoy and hope it makes you laugh.

Just for fun, here is a parody with a surprise ending that you may like.  A guy is in New York headed around town and check out the people's reactions.  :-)

Enjoy Watching!

  1. Haha It also addresses the Korean people trying to keep up with the Jones's (the Kim's?) and spending more money than they have to make it happen. The average Korean household (in Korea) is 150% in debt.
